Solar Powered Electricity

Solar Energy systems to generate electricity are becoming an increasingly popular green alternative to traditional energy sources.

A typical solar powered system for a house will consist of photovoltaic panels fitted to the roof area to collect the power of the sun's rays. The sun's rays are powerful and power is collected for electricity even on the cloudiest day. This power is then used by the householder during the day, and any excess is fed back to the National Grid, where the householder receives a set fee per kilowatt of electricity sold to the National Grid.

Solar energy installations have been available and operating successfully for many years. When they were first designed and installed, the cost was quite high. As these types of solar installations for cost effective energy have become more popular, the cost of installation has reduced significantly whilst the collection of the solar power has increased. This is due to higher quality and technically superior designed solar panels that produce more power from the rays of the sun than the originally designed solar panels of years ago.

The cost of energy has increased globally, this has created a situation where solar powered systems become even more cost effective in providing low cost energy.

The roof panels that collect the power from the sun are known as photovoltaic panels and are sometimes referred to as PV panels. As technology races forward, these panels are being designed to become more and more efficient.

Currently the most popular choice of solar powered electricity seems to be the installation of PV panels, being photovoltaic panels.

Solar Powered Hot Water

The other current popular solution is to install solar thermal panels for heating hot water. The thermal panels fit to the roof and work in a similar way to an indirect gas central heating boiler system. The solar thermal roof panels facilitate heating the hot water in a domestic hot water cylinder.

This solar powered hot water system provides low cost hot water whilst reducing the user's carbon footprint by utilising green energy. For example, if your gas boiler only heated hot water, then the solar thermal roof panels will act in a similar way to your gas boiler, except the solar thermal panels will be collecting their energy from the sun's rays, and not from natural gas.
